Bonjour/ Hello,
The 70 members of la Force de l’Amitié de Montréal and myself extend to you our warmest welcome to our website…and to Montréal!
Founded in 1642 by a French discoverer Chomedey de Maisonneuve, Montréal is one of the oldest cities in North America and the second largest French-speaking city in the world… after Paris. Montréal is an island on the majestic St. Lawrence River.
A smoldering hotbed of creativity and culture, Montréal proffers up a delectable cocktail of European chic, daring innovation and urban sparkle. This natural duality fuels the city’s distinctive character: its Franco-British heritage, its old and modern architecture, and its mix of traditional and ultramodern styles.
Montréal is where high-tech goes hand in hand with haute cuisine, where skyscrapers rub shoulders with stylish little boutiques and where international festivals run alongside a multitude of emerging independent events. But above all, it is the 3.7 million Montréalers – representing no less than 80 different ethnic groups –, their inherent joie-de-vivre, legendary hospitality and attachment to their city that really gives Montréal its full flavour. Because, from the cobblestone streets of Old Montréal to the glitz of downtown to either end of the island, Montrealers really make their city come alive.
For members of Friendship Force Clubs across the world who are thinking of visiting our club, you will find us to be a most friendly group. Montrealers in general are socially uninhibited. We make eye contact easily and will be ready to embrace you right from the first meeting. In a nutshell, in Montréal, we speak two languages, French and English, we live on two levels, on-street and underground, so that we would rather be marmots than beavers!
There’s a lot more I could say about Montréal. Nothing would be better than visiting us and meeting the members of our club who actually live, work and play in the city, the ones who are the heart and soul of Montréal and who infuse it with that certain “je ne sais quoi” that makes it so special.
